Cold outdoor air has significantly lower humidity than warm air. Heated indoor air compounds this, as central heating further desiccates indoor environments. The result is a consistent moisture gradient between your skin and the surrounding air that relentlessly pulls water out of the skin's outer layers. Most people's response — applying a heavier moisturizer — addresses the symptom. The correct response addresses the mechanism.

The Science of Skin Hydration

Skin hydration is maintained by two systems: the water content of skin cells and the lipid barrier that prevents that water from evaporating. Cold reduces sebum production, weakening the lipid barrier. Low humidity increases transepidermal water loss (TEWL). Treating winter dryness effectively requires both replacing moisture and sealing it in place.

The Correct 3-Step Routine

  1. Step 1 — Humectant on damp skin. Immediately after cleansing (while skin is still slightly damp), apply a humectant — hyaluronic acid serum or glycerin-based product. Apply a pea-sized amount and press gently — do not rub.
  2. Step 2 — Moisturizer to lock in the humectant. Within 60 seconds of applying the humectant (before it dries), apply moisturizer over the top. In winter, switch to a cream moisturizer containing ceramides — the lipid molecules that repair the skin barrier.
  3. Step 3 — Occlusive at night. Apply a thin layer of petrolatum/Vaseline, squalane oil, or a dedicated sleeping mask as the final nighttime step. Occlusives create a physical seal over the layers beneath, reducing overnight TEWL dramatically.

The most common winter skincare mistake is applying moisturizer to dry skin. Apply it to damp skin, over a humectant, within 60 seconds — the difference in hydration is significant.

The Room Humidity Factor

No skincare routine fully compensates for extremely low indoor humidity. Central heating typically brings indoor humidity to 20–30% — dermatologists recommend 40–50% for optimal skin health. A bedroom humidifier running while you sleep is one of the most impactful skin interventions available, regardless of what products you apply.
