Plumbing problems feel intimidating because pipes are hidden and water damage is expensive. But the majority of common household plumbing issues involve accessible components that require only basic tools and no special knowledge to address.

1. Slow or Clogged Drain

Chemical drain cleaners damage pipes over time. The correct tools are a drain snake and a cup plunger. Remove the drain stopper if present, insert the drain snake, rotate clockwise while pushing, and pull out accumulated hair and debris. For kitchen sinks with grease buildup, pour boiling water down the drain first, then snake. This fix handles 90% of slow drains.

2. Running Toilet

A continuously running toilet wastes up to 200 gallons of water per day. Drop food coloring in the tank — color appearing in the bowl within 15 minutes confirms flapper failure. A replacement flapper costs $5 and installs in 10 minutes. If water is running over the overflow tube, the fill valve needs adjustment or replacement ($10–15 part).

3. Leaking Faucet

A dripping faucet loses up to 3,000 gallons per year. For ball faucets (single handle that rotates), buy the repair kit for your specific faucet brand. For compression faucets (two handles), the washer at the bottom of the stem is almost always the culprit. Turn off the water supply valves under the sink, disassemble the handle, replace the washer, and reassemble. The repair takes 20–30 minutes.

The rule for DIY plumbing: anything downstream of the shutoff valve is fair game for a homeowner to fix. Anything involving main supply lines may require a professional.

4. Low Water Pressure in a Single Faucet

Low pressure in one faucet but not others is almost always an aerator issue. Unscrew the small mesh screen at the tip of the faucet spout, soak in white vinegar for 30 minutes to dissolve mineral deposits, rinse, and reattach. Replacement aerators cost under $5.

5. Water Heater Pilot Light

Set the temperature knob to "Pilot," press and hold the reset button, and ignite the pilot with a long lighter. Hold the reset button for 60 seconds after ignition before releasing. If the pilot will not stay lit after three attempts, the thermocouple needs replacement ($15–25 part).

6. Toilet Not Flushing Properly

Weak flushes are usually caused by low water level in the tank, a partially blocked drain, or mineral buildup in the rim holes. For mineral buildup, pour white vinegar into the overflow tube in the tank and let it sit overnight. The vinegar dissolves deposits in the rim holes and restores flush power without chemicals.
